Ian Ferrell - Texas Tech University Graduate
A resident of Katy, Texas, Ian Ferrell was recently a student at Texas Tech University, graduating in December 2024. Ian Ferrell studied geography and the environment, with a minor in geographic information systems (GIS). He also interned with a Texas-based energy company.
Mr. Ferrell’s educational experiences included interning for two summers with Plains All American Pipeline Company. In May 2023, he was an GIS intern, using software to engage in legal description mapping, asset mapping, and updating system mapping. As an operations intern the following summer, he performed field operations liking pigging, pipeline maintenance, and reviewing pipeline drawings.
Later in his educational training, Mr. Ferrell participated in two projects. The first was the Texas Tech Junction Surveying Project, where he surveyed and mapped the boundaries of Texas Tech’s campus at Junction. He was also involved with the Comanche Trail Project with the West Texas Historical Association (WTHA), where he worked with WTHA members to create a map of newly discovered buffalo trails.
Mr. Ferrell’s professional interests after college include exploring how GIS mapping can assist authorities during natural disasters and can be used to visualize historical events. He is also interested in how GIS software, such as ESRE, is revolutionizing 3D visualization and AI mapping. In addition to working with oil and gas, he wants to explore untapped energy reserves and learn more about how drilling technology has advanced to make the industry safer and cleaner.
